Voice and Video Calls Feature on X/Twitter

In a transformative move, Elon Musk announced three months ago that Twitter/X would introduce voice and video calling features. This feature was initially reserved for premium subscribers only. However, this feature is now available for every user, enhancing the overall Twitter/X communication capabilities.


The Voice and Video Call feature on Twitter/X brings a new dimension to social interactions on the platform, aligning Twitter/X with other major apps like Facebook and Instagram. Regardless of subscription status, every Twitter/X user can now enjoy the benefits of voice and video calls. While premium subscribers receive additional functionalities.


The voice and video calling features are integrated into the direct messages page, and controls can be accessed from the settings page. Users will automatically be set to receive calls from accounts they follow or have in their address book. However, users can make changes from the settings page according to their preferences. Below are the steps to enable/disable voice and video calling on Twitter/X:

  1. On Twitter/X, head to the Direct Message settings.
  2. Tap the settings option in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap on toggle to Enable/Disable audio and video calling.

Once the voice and video calling is enabled, user will see further options to manage preferences under the Enable/Disable audio and video calling toggle. From their they can choose who can contact them. They will have following options to filter unwanted calls:

  • People in their Address Book: Only your contacts can call you. Need to give Contacts permission to Twitter/X App
  • People They Follow: Anyone you follow can contact you
  • Verified User: Only verified users will be able to call you. Calls from non-verified users will be filtered

To reduce unwanted calls, Twitter/X has add additional layer of filter in which only the person whom you have contacted before can call you.

Further, users will have additional option to enhance call privacy in which the IP address will nor be shared to the person being contacted.
